At Judson Manor, a retirement community in Cleveland, Ohio, Tiffany Tieu, 26, and Laura Berick, 80, live under the same roof. Judson Manor houses a group of music students for free in exchange for performing concerts for the older residents. We think that this intergenerational living solution is really exciting and we are very happy to share it with you. At Judson Manor age is just a number. Shouldn't it always be like that? Watch the short film about Tiffany and Laura below about friendship and not age.

A few years back a very smart member of the Judson management team got in touch with the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM). What emerged was a ground breaking residential partnership where graduate-level CIM students began living at Judson Manor in University Circle. In exchange for free living accommodation, the students provide music concerts at all three of Judson’s retirement communities.

The programme was an instant success and this intergenerational program has flourished beyond anyone’s expectations. Just like the Humanitas story we shared a few months back (you can read it here) the success is due to more than a convenient living arrangement for the students. The film of Tiffany Tieu, 26, and Laura Berick, 80 below is just one of the many stories where the students and residents have built meaningful friendships that beat generational gaps. While students share their musical talents, residents share art lessons, cooking tips, career advice, and even relationship advice.

We hope that communities like this will spread out all of the world, and for it to turn into a 'go to' living situation for many people of all ages. It is truly inspiring, and a win, win situation and is a perfect evolution of the retirement home where people of the same age live under one roof, a situation we know from our research isn't something that 86% of any age wants.
